In short, the entire process of only being in direct control of an individual player has pretty much gone out of the window, replaced by a system more akin to being an arrow-wielding Andy Gray on Sky Sports. Effectively you're an all-seeing tactician in control of a live match. You have the ability to direct the flow of play, often using several players at once.

As the first entry in the series on the Wii, Pro Evolution 2008 is remarkable. It’s a credit to the Konami team that their solution to the Wii-mote manages to stick so readily, and it’s a sign that developers are finally beginning to un-tap the potential of the machine. Providing a free-flowing football experience like no other before it, it’s not only the best title of its sort on the Wii, but also an indicator of what’s possible for the genre as a whole when genuine innovation is applied.

Ever since the curtain was pulled back on Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 for Wii, we knew it was going to be something special. The integration of IR into a sports game has been extremely minimal so far, but is absolutely ideal in this situation, allowing players to not only play the ball specifically, but direct traffic and precisely move every player on the field in tandem, making for the most realistic, strategic, and intuitive soccer experiences we’ve ever seen. It’ll take a bit of time to learn the basics, but Pro Evo is extremely rewarding, is hands-down one of the top sports titles on Wii.

You can plan and simultaneously execute one-twos with the aid of the cursor, which is very satisfying. If you pass the ball into space, your nearest player will run onto it, so through-balls are now an exact science as you can pinpoint where you want the through-ball to be met.

PES Wii 2008 is about the football team as opposed to a series of players you take control of. As soon as you gain control of the ball, you almost have to forget about the individual. Instead, you absent-mindedly direct him with the Nunchuk's, while concentrating on directing other players around the pitch using the Remote. It plays like a hybrid of traditional PES and a RTS, where you cease concentrating on the individual and think more about your units

What the Wii version of Pro Evolution 2008 promises is an unprecedented level of control both on and off the ball, with the Wii-mote and Nunchuk used in tandem to direct the team. Yielding such omniscience comes at a price however – the control system is certainly the most complex we've come across in a football title, and as such the tutorials are not only highly recommended but a strict necessity. Before you can even indulge in a little kick around you'll be taken through the rudimentary basics - dribbling is controlled either by the Nunchuk stick or by the ubiquitous cursor – point it in the direction you want the player to run and they will duly follow and the further away the cursor is from the player, the faster they run...
...What really excites is what is capable when the controls are fully grasped – with such untold control in your hands a whole different skill set is required, and after the relative disappointment of the Xbox 360 and PS3 incarnations, Pro Evolution 2008 on the Wii looks to be the first truly next-generation offering from the series.
